Since the amalgamation of a handful of small villages including St. Mary’s, St. Maurice, Colebrook, Woodford, Newham, Langage and Chaddlewood, the area of Plympton has grown massively in popularity.

Now known as a suburb in the city of Plymouth, the population has more than doubled since the 1990s as Plymouth also grew.

Plympton’s history as an ancient stannary town is evident in its medieval buildings, many of which are Grade II listed, and even a few are Grade I listed!

Fun fact: Plympton is listed in the Doomsday Book of 1086 as being held by King William the Conqueror! 

In more contemporary times, Plympton is a popular suburb for its sizable houses, good schooling, local shopping facilities and sports and activities.

Houses in Plympton are a big draw to the area, known for their good size and price tag. Rightmove reports the average price for a house in Plympton was £259,778 as of last year.

There’s a healthy mix of new builds and historical properties, and the majority of sales last year were semi-detached homes. According to Rightmove, the average semi-detached property was sold for £257,969. 

Terrace houses went for £221,415, with detached homes fetching £395,170. 

Rightmove also reports that house prices in Plympton have risen 8% since last year, and rose 17% since the peak in 2019 where the average house sold for £222,676.

What parks, play areas and facilities does Plympton have?

Plympton, right on the edge of Plymouth, is surrounded by green fields popular with dog walkers and explorers. 

But within the suburb, there are also lots of parks, playgrounds and sports facilities. 

Underwood Recreation Ground is the most central and biggest green space, and comes with its own play park: Linketty Lane Play Area. 

There’s also Peacock Meadow Park to the north of the area, with neighbouring Rashleigh Ave Play Area. Towards the east of the area, there’s Newham Meadows Park and playground, and find Plympton Skate Park at the Chaddlewood end of the area.

That’s not to mention Westfield Play Area, The Dog Field, and Woodford Park. 

Joining a sports club is also easy in Plympton, whether you choose Plympton Cricket Club (with home ground at Harewood Park), Plympton Lawn Tennis Club, Plympton Bowling Club, Play Netball Plymouth, Plympton Victoria Rugby Club or perhaps try out for Plympton Athletic Football Club!

You can also keep fit at Plympton Swimming Pool, or maybe join the newly built Pure Gym at Marsh Mills. 

On the outskirts of Plympton, you’ll find Boringdon Park Golf Club and Boringdon Hall Hotel and Spa, perfect for getting in a round and relaxing on special occasions.

What shops and services are there in Plympton?

The main shopping district of Plympton is the Ridgeway. You’ll be hard pushed to not find what you’re looking for here, with a Post Office, Coop, Iceland, pharmacies, fashion shops, bakeries and even a florist. 

There’s also both an Aldi and a Lidl in the area, as well as two Tesco Express stores, plus a handful of bigger shops at Marsh Mills, including B&M and multiple furniture stores.

In terms of health care, you’ll find Plympton Clinic at the Ridgeway, plus other health care providers such as Colebrook Foot Clinic and Mobile Underwood Chiropody and Podiatry. 

For places of worship, Plympton has two main churches – St. Thomas at Plympton St. Maurice and St. Mary’s.

Are there any pubs, takeaways or restaurants in Plympton?

Plympton has quite a few notable pubs, known for their delicious food. The Lord Louis is popular for a Sunday carvery, and The Chaddlewood, The Colebrook Inn and The Unicorn are all top choices too.

 At the Ridgeway, there’s The Stannary, which is a JD Whetherspoons pub, and also The Sir Joshua Reynolds pub. 

If it’s a takeaway you fancy, there’s a lot to choose from too. Chinese, Pizza, Indian, Fish and Chips and family favourite McDonald’s, are all available in the area.

There’s also many cafes and bakeries at the Ridgeway, serving delicious cakes, coffee, tea and of course, pasties!

Which schools are in the Plympton catchment area?

There are two secondary schools in Plympton, both of high regard. Plympton Academy, formerly The Ridgeway School, and Hele’s School. 

There’s also quite a few primary schools to choose from, including Boringdon Primary School, Chaddlewood Primary School, Yealmpstone Farm Primary School, Old Priory Junior School and Woodford Primary.

What are the transport links like in Plympton?

By car, there are two main ways to enter Plympton, via the A38, or via Marsh Mills roundabout. 

Plymouth Citybus runs four bus routes in and out of Plympton, including to the city centre. 

By foot, most of the area is within walking distance of each other, and the main high street of The Ridgeway is easily accessible to all areas of Plympton.
