Plymouth named one of the top family-friendly cities in the UK

family-friendly

Plymouth has been named one of the top family-friendly cities in the UK.

A new study by the Daily Mail evaluated property prices, crime rates, schooling, and local amenities to determine the best spots for family living.

With all that taken into consideration, Plymouth is among the perfect places to settle down and raise a family.

In her piece for the Daily Mail, Angela Epstein wrote: “Choosing where to buy a home and settle down as a family can be one of life’s most important decisions. The implications on your finances and family’s happiness are huge.

“(Plymouth) is renowned for its maritime heritage and offers a picturesque waterfront, abundant parks, and proximity to Dartmoor National Park and the Devon and Cornwall coastlines, providing ample outdoor activities for families.”

Plymouth is the perfect gateway for Cornwall and the South Hams, both of which are accessible within 15 minutes of the city centre. Our Lang Town & Country team deals with properties in all of these locations.

Here, we look at five reasons Plymouth has been named one of the top family-friendly cities in the UK.

A family-friendly city with affordable housing

Plymouth offers affordable housing for families, certainly when compared with the rest of the UK.

Over the past year, the average property price in Plymouth has been £240,745. That makes it significantly more affordable than the national average of just under £265,000, according to Zoopla.

Outstanding quality of life

This isn’t the first time Plymouth has received such an accolade. Last year, the city was ranked second in the UK for best quality of life by job search site Totaljobs, just behind Edinburgh.

Perfectly located between the coast and Dartmoor National Park, the family-friendly city’s maritime heritage, picturesque waterfront and abundant parks provide plenty of outdoor activities for families to enjoy.

Excellent education options

For families with children, Plymouth boasts excellent schooling options. Devonport High School for Girls and Devonport High School for Boys are highly-rated grammar schools, excelling in key subjects such as English, maths, and sciences.

For younger children, High View School and Tor Bridge Primary School were rated as Outstanding by Ofsted in their latest inspections, with an additional 14 primary schools and nurseries receiving a ‘Good’ rating.

Affordable childcare

Childcare in family-friendly Plymouth is reasonably priced, with the average cost of full-time nursery care for children aged two and over at £269.74 a week, and £287.41 a week for toddlers under two

This is just slightly above the national weekly average of £263 for full-time care for under-twos.

Family-friendly neighbourhoods

If you’re new to Plymouth and are looking for the best family-friendly areas to settle down in, Plympton and Plymstock are top choices among locals.

In fact, Plymstock was named as one of the top three locations in the UK for home sellers in spring 2021.

For the most affordable housing, consider the PL4 postcode area, covering central and south-east Plymouth, including Lipson, the Barbican, Mutley, Mount Gould, Prince Rock, and St Judes, where properties sold for an average of just £191,400 over the past year.
